Programs offered at Machicomoco State Park

Machicomoco State Park, Hayes, has a number of programs scheduled throughout June.

Tsenacomacoh Tools & Tech: This program will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 3; at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 24 and at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28. In the first program, participants will learn how to twist cordage and tie a fishing net. In the second, participants will learn how to craft bone fishing hooks. On June 28, they will take part in the burning and scraping of a log canoe and then enjoy s’mores. Pre-registration is required along with a $5 fee.

Clean the Bay Day/National Trails Day: From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 4, park guests are invited to help with park cleanup.

Design at Dawn: On Sunday, June 5 and Saturday, June 25 at 10 a.m. there will be a guided sculpting program to sculpt their own flower. At 10 a.m. on June 11, park goers can sculpt and learn about the wildlife around the park. Pre-registration and a $10 fee are required to participate in each event.

Owl Prowl: On Friday, June 10 at 8 p.m. guests can learn different owl calls and take part in interactive activities. Those interested in the event are to meet at the Trailhead parking lot.

The Mystery of History Hike: On Saturday, June 11 at 4 p.m. and at 10 a.m. the following Saturday, June 18, park goers can hike with park staff to learn about a mystery or controversy surrounding the arrival of colonists on Native American lands.

Expedition Environment, Water Wash: On Sunday, June 12 at 6 p.m. guests can take part in an educational water testing activity at the Outdoor Classroom. Pre-registration and a $5 fee are required to participate in this event.

Birding for Beginners: On Monday, June 13 at 9 a.m. park guests can take park in a bird hike to learn the basics of bird watching.

Trek for Tracks: On Monday June 13 at 11 a.m. and at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 26, park goers can learn how to identify the tracks of Machicomoco and cast their own tracks. The event will be at the Demonstration Circle.

Design at Dusk: At 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 17, park goers can paint the most scenic spots in the park by participating in this art program. And at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 27, park goers are invited to draw scenes of the park. Pre-registration and a $10 fee are required to participate in each event.

Pollinators Investigator: On Friday, June 17 at 10 a.m. park goers can discover the pollinators of the park by going to the Interpretive Area to learn about and attempt to find our pollinator pals.

Junior Ranger: Programs will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 18 and 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 19. In the first, guests can earn a patch by participating in a mock dig for artifacts. On June 19, guests can earn a patch by learning and practicing tree ID skills.

Expedition Environment, Conservation Exploration: On Monday, June 20 at 10 a.m. guests can practice wildlife and plant population estimations as a future conservationist by joining us at the Outdoor Classroom. Pre-registration and a $5 fee are required to participate.

The Dangerous and the Deadly: On Saturday, June 25 at 4 p.m., park guests can take part in this educational activity to learn about venomous snakes, poisonous plants and medical plants. The event will be at Picnic Shelter 2.
