Preservation Mathews: Group has new name, expanded mission

A group that formed with a mission to save the L.M. Callis house met last week and made some changes, including adopting a new name, appointing officers and solidifying plans for moving ahead.

Preservation Mathews, formerly called Friends of Saving the Callis House, initially came together to preserve the Callis house, a structure with historic significance in Mathews that is owned by the Bay School Community Arts Center. The center has offered to sell the house to the committee for one dollar if the committee will remove it from the center’s property.

Committee members expressed concern about how many buildings in Mathews have been demolished over time, and they decided that saving the Callis house will be the initial project in a broader effort to save other historical structures in the county. With that in mind, they decided to apply for status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
