Pocahontas memorial service

A small crowd including county officials turned out at noon on Tuesday to remember Gloucester’s most famous resident, the Native American princess Pocahontas. The annual Pocahontas memorial service was held at the statue located at the intersection of Main Street and Belroi Road. Kenny Richardson served as master of ceremonies, while pastors from Zion Poplars Baptist, Severn and St. James on-the-Glebe Anglican churches made brief comments. The event was held on the 406th anniversary of her death in Gravesend, England. Here, Katey Legg, Director of Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism, places a wreath at the statue with 9-year-old Emma Chapman. Emma and her brother, Corey, were on hand representing the Adventure Awaits Homeschoolers of Gloucester.
