Plans are underway to increase security at Mathews County Public Schools, with weapons detectors to be deployed at Mathews High School and Thomas Hunter Middle School and environmental sensors deployed in the bathrooms at MHS.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. David S. Daniel briefed school board members on the plans during Tuesday night’s board meeting, which was held in the Brooks Auditorium at THMS.
This year, Mathews County Public Schools is set to receive $84,800 from the state Department of Education earmarked for weapons detection and fencing at the two schools. The division will meet with a vendor in the coming weeks.
A key part, Daniel said, will be developing the protocol around this system, how it is staffed and how and where it is deployed. He said that Mathews is fortunate because several neighboring school divisions are about a year or so ahead of them in this technology and can learn from the protocols they have adopted.
