PHILLIP COULBOURN TYLER

Phillip Coulbourn Tyler, 67, of Gloucester, Va., passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026 after facing the challenges of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a rare neurological disease. He was born in Charlottesville, Va., son of Coulbourn Hurt Tyler and Anne Lee Chapman Tyler. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lee Tyler Weidhaas, and his father. He is survived by his mother, Anne Lee Chapman Tyler; his brother-in-law, Gary Weidhaas; and nieces, Annie Weidhaas Conte, Claire Coulbourn Weidhaas, and Geneva Gail Weidhaas.

Phil loved his life playing and growing up on the campus of Ferrum College. He graduated from Franklin County High School in Rocky Mount, Va., went to Lees-McRae Junior College in North Carolina, and then graduated from Ferrum College with a B.S. in Business. After college he served four years in the U.S. Army.

Phil’s favorite working years were at Snowshoe Ski Resort in West Virginia. He enjoyed his 18 years of service there as a ski instructor, ski school supervisor, and ski patrol. During the summer months, he did independent contract work and golf club maintenance. He also volunteered nearby for the Shavers Fork Fire Department.

After Snowshoe, he did construction work on the Outer Banks and then in Gloucester, where he moved to be closer to his parents. After eight years, he became an assistant property manager with the Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck Community Services Board from which he retired. He then could pursue his favorite pastimes—fishing, woodworking, and being with Lady, his yellow lab.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at Olive Branch Global Methodist Church, 10833 Harcum Road, Gloucester, Va. 23061. Following the service, there will be a Celebration of Life at the Piankatank Community League, 11888 Harcum Road, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
