Over 1,500 deer killed in Gloucester, Mathews during season

Preliminary figures show that 1,045 deer were killed in Gloucester during the 2025-26 season, and 471 in Mathews. The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources released the figures last week. The Gloucester County figures included 389 antlered males, 131 male fawns, and 525 females. The total of 1,045 was down from the 2024 harvest of 1,107 deer. In Mathews County, the deer kill included 175 antlered males, 60 male fawns, and 236 females. The total of 471 was down from 510 in 2024. DWR has maintained totals of deer reported killed since 1947, when 24 were killed in Gloucester, and 16 in Mathews. Statewide, DWR said, “Hunters reported harvesting 227,302 deer. This was up approximately 10 percent from last year’s total of 205,759 over the same timeframe, and up 14 percent from the previous 10-year average of 198,666.
