Off to the races: MHS comes out on top at first meet

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both bested their opponents last Wednesday, Aug. 31, at their first meet of the season at Beaverdam Park, Gloucester. Mathews faced runners from Lancas-ter, Rappahannock and Westmoreland high schools on the sunny afternoon.

Seth James placed first overall with a time of 18:42. Gavin Dustin placed fourth with a time of 19:51, followed by Jaxon McDonald in fifth (19:57) and Salvador Cardenas placing sixth (20:06).

Next for Mathews was Andrew Greve who finished with a time of 20:12, followed by Blake Hunley (20:13), Chance Higginbotham (20:25), Jon Jenkins (21:10), Zachary Salvadori (JV) (21:39), Elias Hidalgo (22:02), Adam Dustin (22:10), Noah Hurst (22:15), Franklin Cardenas (JV) (22:27), Samuel Miranda (JV) (22:43), Cristian Miranda (JV) (22:45), Brayden Larson (23:31), Hunter Horsley (JV) (25:08), Adam Greve (JV) (25:51), Michael Ray (25:56) and James Morgan (JV) (28:40).
