No tax increase in proposed budget

Mathews supervisors last Thursday ironed out some details in the $16.54 million county budget they are proposing for the 2015-16 fiscal year.

A public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. next Thursday, April 16, to find out what residents think about the document. No tax increase is proposed. The current real estate tax rate is 54 cents per $100 of assessed value, while the personal property tax rate for vehicles is $3.70 per $100 of assessed value.

The proposed total county budget, including schools and Social Services, is $23.75 million, a decrease of $103,842 from the current year’s budget.

Among the changes made to the original document that the board discussed on March 31 was a 1.5 percent increase in salaries for all county employees and a reduction of $150,000 in the funding requested by the schools. If the budget is approved as-is, Social Services will be funded as requested.
