No narcotics found following drug sweep at GHS

The second drug sweep at Gloucester High School in less than two months found the campus narcotics-free again last Thursday, according to Gloucester Sheriff Darrell Warren.

Warren said the GSO has historically conducted a drug sweep at the school once a year. After the first sweep using drug-detecting canines on Feb. 27, he said his office received information from several GHS students who believed some teenagers were now bringing drugs to the school. That prompted the search last week.

For the latest sweep, Warren said his office used canine handlers from the Virginia Department of Corrections who were able to bring seven dogs for the task. The added number of canines reduced the search to just about an hour, during which the school was under lockdown.

Warren said the search was concentrated in the A hall section of the school, with a sweep through other corridors and locker areas as well. Three or four classrooms were also randomly selected for a search, and the canines were ...
