Mobjack rowers excel at regatta

The Mobjack Rowing Association traveled Saturday to Sandy Run Regional Park in Occoquan for the Ryz Obuchowicz Regatta. Entering for three schools, Mobjack netted a gold for Mathews High School in the men’s double and a silver and bronze in the men’s single for Gloucester and Williamsburg Academy, respectively.

The MRA has expanded its programs for spring youth competitive rowing.

Traditionally, Mobjack sponsored only Mathews High School students in the spring; however, this season MRA athletes also come from Gloucester and a homeschool student from Williamsburg Classical Academy’s high school program.

As high school students, they are accepted in the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association’s spring series, which has a broad and competitive arena for competition.

In the first race, Zach Hudgins of Gloucester and Will Lang of Williamsburg Academy placed second and third, respectively, in a field of five entries behind Stone Bridge and ahead of Episcopal, and a second Gloucester entry. Next to race was the Mathews High School entry of Sam Tomcany and Bryce Clarke in the six entry men’s senior double event. The MHS duo led from start to finish taking the gold, with Gar-Field A, Fairfax, Gloucester, Gar-Field B and Mount Vernon finishing out the field.

Mobjack Rowing is holding an Open House on Saturday at Williams Wharf, from 10 a.m. to noon. It is open to all youth from Mathews and surrounding counties as well as homeschool students.
