MHS volleyball still looking for 1st win

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team is still looking for its first win, following a season-opening loss on the road to Northumberland on Aug. 23 and losing all three sets in last Thursday’s home opener against the visiting Rappahannock Raiders.

In the Northumberland game, the 13 members of the MHS team gave it their best shot, but fell by scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-13. The ball was served 40 times with an average of 87.5 percent accuracy. Olivia Ashbaugh brought the heat scoring two aces, and Reese Brock secured an ace as well. Every serve made by Chelsea Lowe, Autumn Jenkins and Olivia Ashbaugh made it over and in. Forty-seven attacks were launched at Northumberland with 17 of them resulting in a kill, with Olivia Ashbaugh scoring five kills and her twin sister Sarah getting four.
