MHS varsity girls improve to 10-4 with win over Drifters

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up a win Monday night on the road against the Colonial Beach Drifters, 49-44, improving the Devils’ record to 10-4 overall.

Senior Joice Small led the team with 19 points, while juniors Sarah Ashbaugh (11 points) and Reese Brock (10 points) also ended the night in double digits. Junior Zayle Darby (five points) and senior Olivia Coons (four points) rounded out the scoring for Mathews.

The JV Devils weren’t as fortunate, falling to Colonial Beach by a 23-9 margin. Sophomore Lannah Callis led the MHS girls with four points, while freshmen Lindsay Coons and Alivia Garrett contributed two points each and freshman Liberti Carter added a single point. With the loss, the JV team falls to 5-6 overall.
