MHS tennis beats Raiders, 8-1; loses to York

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team picked up a convincing 8-1 victory last Thursday against the Rappahannock Raiders, the reigning Region A team champions.

In singles play, top-seeded Aly Collins was first off the court for Mathews after posting an 8-1 win over Megan Knight. Second-seed Amy Collins won her set, 8-5, over Abby Geska. Kasey Lynn Lyerly suffered the only loss for Mathews, losing an 8-5 battle to Lori Gagnon.

Mallory Hurst, the Devils’ #4 seed, posted an 8-2 win over Amanda Fallin. Mercedes Wells and Lamar Saunders, the MHS fifth- and sixth-seed singles players, won by 8-3 and 8-4 margins, respectively.

In doubles play, the Collins twins defeated Knight and Geska, 8-3. Hurst and Wells defeated Gagnon and Fallin, 8-4, in second-seed doubles. Lyerly and Leanne Moughon completed the Devils’ big win with an 8-2 victory at third-seed doubles.
