The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team traveled to Gloucester on Monday to face the Lady Dukes. The MHS girls took the win, 7-2, in hot conditions, with temperatures on the court over 100 degrees.
In singles action, Lady Devil Lyla Duff played number one and won her match, 8-1, against Carly Miller. At number two, Ella Ward of MHS had a tight match but ended up on top with a final score of 8-6 against Julianna Ward. Playing number three, Mathews player Rayann Helbig played well and won her match against Jenaye Oberlin, 8-5. First off the court, number four Delaney Boatman defeated Gloucester’s Kacey Billings, 8-0.
Gloucester’s Emma Specht scored the Dukes’ only singles win, beating Jayda Thomas, 8-1, at fifth seed. At six, Charlotte Bailey of Mathews played a strong match against Ally Bishop, who ended up forfeiting due to the heat.
Moving into doubles, Duff and Ward played number one doubles against Miller and Ward, and Mathews took home the win, 8-5. Helbig and Boatman played an aggressive game at number two doubles, beating Oberlin and Billings, 8-0. Playing number three doubles, Thomas and Bailey played a hard and close match against Specht and a sub-in but could not beat Gloucester, the final score, 8-6.
There was also an opportunity for some exhibition players to show what they got. Jordan Sadeg and Emily Moughon won by 6-2 margins and Ayla Martinez won, 6-4.
The Region 1A team tennis tournament starts today with Mathews earning a bye at number-two seed. Mathews will play in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Mathews tennis courts.
