MHS softball posts back-to-back wins

After struggling at the start of the season, the Mathews High School varsity softball team seems to have hit its stride, posting back-to-back five-inning wins this week over visitors from Lafayette and Charles City. The Lady Devils also dropped a 14-3 contest Friday to the visiting Essex Trojans.

Charles City

Mathews dominated the visiting Charles City Panthers on Tuesday night, 14-2. Angel Shultz was the winning pitcher, striking out 11 in the lopsided victory.

The Devils picked up eight runs in the bottom of the third on the way to victory. Alivia Garrett hit a double and single in the win, Addison Griffith contributed a double, while Shultz, Addy Lowe, Emily Coons and Hannah Davis also collected hits.

Lafayette

Sparked by a 10-run first inning, the Mathews High School varsity softball team rolled over the visiting Lafayette Rams on Monday in a five-inning affair, 15-3.
