The Mathews High School soccer teams advanced to their regional tournaments, with both the boys and girls falling in the first round last Thursday.
MHS boys
After a long, successful season for the MHS boys’ soccer team, they ended with a loss to Middlesex in the regional tournament at the Chargers home field. The boys fell short in overtime by a final score of 4-3.
Salvador Cardenas scored the first goal of the game, the second goal was scored by Fabian Cardenas, and the final goal was scored by Franklin Cardenas, in the final second of the game. The boys’ soccer team finished its season with a 9-8 record, placing third in the region.
MHS girls
The MHS girls’ soccer team traveled to Northampton High School for the first round of the regional tournament. The Blue Devils fell short to the Yellow Jackets with a score of 2-0. Northampton will continue in the regional tournament as MHS ends their season. After only winning one game last season, the MHS girls compiled a 3-6 record in 2024.
All District
A number of Mathews soccer players earned All-Tidewater District honors. Two members of the MHS boys’ team—midfielder Fabian Cardenas and defensive specialist Andrew Greve—won first-team honors. Sal Cardenas (forward), Seth James (midfield) and Franklin Cardenas (defense) made second team. For the girls, forward Adelle Hudgins won first-team honors, while midfielder Zoe Camp, goalie Trinity Reynolds and defensive player Baylee Bell received second team.
