The Mathews High School varsity softball team finished out its regular season on Friday, crushing the visiting Woodside Wolverines, 19-0. “The girls had a great game,” said head coach J.J. Ashberry. “The team’s mental approach to every game has immensely improved and I’m very happy with that. Our dugout now has energy and enthusiasm. We do have a few injuries that I’m concerned about, but I’m hoping these four-to-five days off before Thursday gives those girls time to heal. “Our girls are ready to do something that hasn’t been done in the last five years and that’s to win a first-round region game, but we have to bring our ‘A’ game every inning from here on out.” In Friday’s Woodside game, Mathews batters collected 16 hits in the five-inning affair. Three pitchers shared duties on the mound, starting with Hailey Love, then Carter Hayes and JV standout Kiera Cannon, who was moved up to varsity.
