MHS soccer falls to West Point, King William

The Mathews High School varsity soccer team dropped a pair of Tidewater District contests by identical 6-1 margins, falling to West Point last Wednesday and King William on Monday.

In the West Point game, the homestanding Pointers kept the ball in the Devils’ side of the field for much of the game, taking 31 shots on goal to only four for Mathews.

Devil Glenn Musgrove led the team in shots on goal with three, followed by Jacob Johnson, Tyler Tillman, P.J. Johnson, and Matt DeForge each with one. The Devils’ only goal came with 11 minutes left in the game, with Jacob Johnson scoring off a cross pass from Musgrove under the 18-yard line. Defensively, Mathews goalie Landon Garrett made 12 saves.

Against King William, the Devils lost by the same margin in spite of a strong effort by Garrett, who had 21 keeper saves. "Landon is on fire," commented co-manager Amanda Hudgins.
