The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team posted three wins this week, improving the squad’s record to 6-2.
In the first match against 4A Grafton last Wednesday, Mathews won, 5-4. Playing number one, Lyla Duff won her match 8-3 against Isabella Na. Number two Ella Ward won her match, 8-2, against Louise Wang. Mathews number three Rayann Helbig was winning her match against Raina Vora but had an injury and had to forfeit. Number four Jayda Thomas lost her match, 8-3, against Sairah Gandhi, but both girls played a great match.
Number five Delaney Boatman had an awesome win against Elia Bragonza with a final score of 8-4. Number six Charlotte Bailey had a tight match and battled to the end against Yuney Kwon but fell, 8-6.
The number-one doubles team of Duff and Ward dominated Na and Vora, winning 8-1. At #2 doubles, Thomas teamed up with Jordan Sadeg, who played her first match in the top six due to Helbig being out, but the pair lost, 8-1, to Wang and Gandhi. Boatman and Bailey played number three doubles and won an 8-2 match against Bragonza and Kwon.
Gloucester
On Thursday, Mathews hosted 4A Gloucester, with the Lady Devils winning, 5-4. At #1 seed, Duff triumphed against Carlee Miller winning, 8-1. Number two Ella Ward also won her match against Julianna Ward, not losing any games with a score of 8-0. Number three Boatman played well against Jenae Oberlin, giving Mathews another win, 8-2. At number four, Bailey played an amazing comeback match but could not quite get the win against Gloucester’s Casey Billings, ending 6-8. Number five Thomas also had a great match against Emma Specht but lost, 8-6. At number six, Emily Moughon lost against Alyanna Bishop, 8-1.
The MHS #1 doubles team of Duff and Ella Ward, playing smart and aggressive, took home the winning score of 8-1 against Miller and Julianna Ward. Number two doubles Boatman and Bailey played very aggressive net and also won, 8-1, against Oberlin and Billings. Thomas and Sadeg played number three doubles and had a tight match but lost to Spetch and Bishop, 8-4.
West Point
On Monday, the team played West Point dominating the match, 9-0. In singles, Duff defeated Shelair Johnson, 8-2; Ward beat Xinyi Chen, 8-1; Boatman dominated her opponent, Kendall Hylton, 8-0; Bailey played smart and won her match against Piper Treadway with a forfeit when Bailey was up, 5-0; Thomas defeated Chloe Sharpe, 8-4; and playing #6 singles for the first time, Sadeg beat Sophia Lacy, 8-3.
In doubles play, Duff and Ward defeated Johnson and Chen, 8-3; Number two Boatman and Bailey defeated Hylton and Ainsley, 8-1 and, completing the sweep, Thomas and Sadeg left their opponents, Emma and Pisiya, scoreless with a win of 8-0.
The next match will be at home against Lancaster on Monday, starting at 4 p.m.
