MHS girls’ tennis clinches state playoff berth

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team defeated Middlesex by a 5-2 margin last Thursday in the Region 1A semifinals. The win qualified the Lady Devils for the state playoffs, starting June 2.

Contributing wins were Taylor Wood, Lily Jarosz, Lyla Duff and Liberti Carter. At the completion of the match, Faith Lewis and Chelsea Lowe won at #1 doubles in thrilling fashion going into a tie breaker.

Last Thursday’s game also served as Senior Night, with seniors Wood, Lowe and Lewis recognized.

In Monday’s finals vs Rappahannock, the Blue Devils competed well but fell to a strong Red Raiders’ squad, 5-0. Mathews will travel to the Region B champion for the state tournament competition.
