MHS girls take on Eagles, Drifters and Indians

The Mathews High School girls’ basketball team had a busy week, with JV and varsity games against Westmoreland, Colonial Beach and Northumberland. The only win posted by the Mathews girls was a JV thriller last Thursday against the visiting Westmoreland Eagles, 22-18.Westmoreland

In the JV contest, the Lady Devils and Eagles battled back and forth throughout, with Mathews holding a narrow 10-9 at the half. In the waning minutes, a key three-pointer put the Lady Devils ahead for good. Elizabeth Moore was the top scorer with 17 of junior varsity’s 21 points.Unfortunately for Mathews, it didn’t go as well for the varsity squad. The visiting Eagles took control from the opening tipoff, leading 13-1 at the end of the first quarter. Mathews recovered some, going into the locker room at the half trailing, 25-14.

In the second half, Mathews played more competitively, but still lost the game, 47-25. Grayson Griffith and Lyla Duff were the top scorers for Mathews with six and five points,...
