Following wins over Tidewater District foes King William and King and Queen during the past week, the Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team is preparing for post-season play.
The MHS girls, who had a 6-1 district record going into Wednesday night’s season-ending contest against King and Queen, will be the top-seeded team with a win. Results from that game were not available at press time.
The Lady Devils defeated King William on the road last Thursday, 32-21. Mathews had early trouble putting the ball in the basket, trailing the hosts, 7-6, after one quarter, but recovered to take a 18-16 lead into the halftime break. King William was very inconsistent offensively in the second half and Mathews took advantage to pull away with an 11-point final margin.
Leading the team with points was Mackenzie Moughon with 10. Taylor Denton and Shelby Ware followed with seven each. Jessi Nelson scored four while Taylor South and Savanna Wooten each added two.
On Monday night, the Lady Blue Devils traveled to play the King and Queen Royal Tigers overwhelming the Lady Tigers, 40-14. The Lady Devils took a 19-9 halftime lead into the locker room. Coach Allie Robins kept the Lady Devils fresh, substituting five players at a time on the way to an easy victory. Shanice Williams and Moughon led the team with 10 and seven points, respectively. Ware followed with six, Nelson and Denton scored four, and Emily Brown dropped three. Wooten, South and Whitney Eriksen each scored two.
Regardless of the outcome of Wednesday night’s game against King and Queen, Mathews will host the first round of the Tidewater District tournament next Wednesday, Feb. 13.
