MHS girls’ junior double finishes 4th in nationals

The Mathews High School crew boys’ junior quad and girls’ junior double competed in last weekend’s Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championships on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J., with the girls advancing to the grand finals, where they placed fourth.

To make it to the grand finals, Scarlet Johnson and Sydney Kollar won their preliminary heat with a time of 6:33.594, beating their closest challenger by about 4 seconds.

In the grand finals, Johnson and Kollar just missed out on winning an SRAA medal, finishing the race with a time of 6:34.199, behind third-place finisher Penn Charter, who crossed the line in 6:31.173.

The boys’ junior quad (Sam Tomcany, Ray Hudgins, Jaxon McDonald and Bradley Murphy) placed second in their preliminary heat, and placed sixth in their semifinal (with only the top three boats going on to the championship).
