MHS girls improve to 12-4; beat Chargers, Tigers

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team improved to 12-4 on the season following a pair of wins on the road this week against Tidewater District opponents Middlesex and King and Queen.

On Monday, the MHS girls traveled to Middlesex where the Devils beat the Chargers by a 45-33 margin. Senior Joice Small provided more than half the points for Mathews, ending the night with 25 points.

Junior Sarah Ashbaugh had the next highest point total with seven points, followed by junior Zayle Darby (five points), senior Olivia Coons and juniors Reese Brock, Kayla Carr and Olivia Ashbaugh (two points apiece).

Small led the MHS girls the following night as well with 23 points as Mathews defeated the King and Queen Tigers, 42-33. Sarah Ashbaugh (eight points), Darby (6), Brock (3) and Carr (2) provided the rest of the scoring.
