MHS girls get two wins

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team picked up its fifth and sixth wins during the week, defeating Middlesex and Carver Academy in a pair of straight-set victories.

The junior varsity girls meanwhile suffered a setback, falling to the visiting Middlesex Chargers last Thursday.

Varsity Devils

The Mathews varsity squad had little trouble with the visitors from Middlesex last Thursday, beating the Chargers, 25-11, 25-19 and 25-13.

Anne Stewart had 11 kills, six digs and one solo block; Belle Massimino had three aces, seven assists and eight digs; Mia Gillenwater had two aces, two assists and 15 digs; Victoria Bing had four kills and seven digs; Sarah Brown had 17 assists and four digs; Caroline Crittenden had five kills and 12 digs, and Madisyn Jackson had seven kills and a solo block.

On Tuesday, Mathews traveled to Carver Academy to play a varsity-only match. The MHS girls picked up where they left off Thursday, rolling over Carver, 25-4, 25-4 and 25-9. Coach Pat Moughon was able to give some of her non-starters some real game experience in the victory.

In Tuesday night’s game, Hannah Robins had five aces and three assists; Lauren Mitchem had three aces and two digs; Stewart had two aces and a kill; Nicole Brown had two kills and three aces; Kristen Frank had an ace and two digs; Hannah Smith had a single kill and a single ace; Massimino had eight aces; Shalya Wheeler had one kill; Maddie Maggioncalda had two kills; Sarah Brown had four assists; Ashley Shackelford had one ace, one kill and a dig; Bing had two aces, a kill and a dig, and Crittenden had eight aces and one kill.

JV Devils

The JV Devils meanwhile had a harder time, losing 2-0 to Middlesex last Thursday, 25-10 and 25-19.

Aleya McCurry had one ace and a dig. Skyller Worley picked up two aces, three assists and one kill. Lydia Hudgins had four aces and two digs, Katelynn Blake contributed one ace and a kill. Lois Beale finished the night with two kills. Emily West and Isabelle Frank had one dig apiece. Jada Ashberry and Jordan Hunley each had a single kill for the game.

The volleyball teams are off until Tuesday, when they travel to face the King and Queen Tigers, starting at 5:30 p.m.
