MHS girls fall to Essex, King & Queen

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team dropped its final two regular season games, and lost in the Tidewater District tournament opener. The Lady Devils hope to turn things around this Tuesday when they travel to Colonial Beach in the first round of regionals.

On Monday, Feb. 6, the MHS girls traveled to Tappahannock to face Essex. The homestanding Trojans edged out the Devils, 35-25. Sarah Ashbaugh and Laura Rowe were the top scorers for Mathews in a losing effort, ending the night with nine and eight points, respectively. Avery Thomas (three points) and Serenity Forrest (two points) provided the rest of the Mathews scoring.

The following night, Tuesday, Feb. 7, the MHS girls hosted King and Queen. The Tigers narrowly defeated the Devils during the Senior Night contest, 41-38.
