The Lady Blue Devils varsity softball team began a busy week with a convincing 9-2 victory over the visiting Northumberland Lady Indians on Tuesday evening.
Mathews jumped on the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Northumberland came back in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead on one earned and one unearned run.
The floodgates opened in the bottom of the second, when Mathews loaded the bases and Kaitlin Eriksen cleared them with a double. Sydney James then drove in Eriksen with a perfectly executed bunt single.
Mathews added three more runs in the third as Northumberland made numerous errors. From there on, Mathews turned the game over to Kayla Robins on the mound. Robins kept the Lady Indians’ offense in check while freshman Kelly Adams closed the game with three scoreless innings. Eriksen led the Lady Blue Devils with two hits (four RBIs), James with one hit (two RBIs) and Hunter Thomas with two hits. Also adding hits in the game was Madison Owens, Taylor South, Amanda Miller and Sydney Morgan. Thomas, a freshman, played steady at third base with five assists.
Mathews hosts Rappahannock tonight and Poquoson on Saturday. Both games begin at 5 p.m.
Jayvee Devils
The jayvee Lady Devils also soundly defeated the Northumberland Indians on Tuesday, winning 12-2. Allison Foster pitched for Mathews and did an excellent job. The Mathews defense backed their pitcher up and kept errors to a minimum. At the plate, the Devils hit better than they had in weeks. In the fifth and sixth innings, the Devils were close to ending the game via the mercy rule, but the Indians held on to push the game to a full seven innings. The jayvee girls will travel to Rappahannock today for a 5 p.m. game and Poquoson on Saturday for a 1 o’clock contest.
