MHS girls beat Tigers on the road

The Mathews High School varsity softball team picked up a 20-14 victory on Tuesday in a road game at King and Queen High School.

The win was the highlight of the Lady Devils’ week; the team also suffered an 8-0 shutout last Thursday against the visiting King William Cavaliers and fell, 25-1, on Monday at home against Rappahannock.

King and Queen

In Tuesday’s game, Angel Shultz pitched the first three innings and collected four strikeouts. Christiana Wood pitched the final four innings, striking out 11 batters. Both Shultz and Wood contributed to the offensive output as well—Shultz had a double and triple while Wood had a double.

As a team, Mathews collected a total of 25 hits, while the Tigers were held to only seven. Leading the offensive onslaught for Mathews were Lindsay Coons and Emily Coons, who each had three hits. Addison Griffith, Alivia Garrett, Laura Rowe, Harmony Smith and Hannah Davis contributed two singles apiece, while Katelyn Mullins added a single as well.
Rappahannock
Monday’s Rappahannock game was a good one for Mathews until the sixth inning. The score was 4-1 at that point, with three of the Raiders’ four runs unearned. After that, unfortunately, the Mathews team fell apart with poor defense and errors. Mathews was held to three hits, with Lowe getting an infield singles and Wood a single and an RBI double.

King William

In last Thursday’s shutout loss to King William, Mathews was held to a pair of hits, singles by Lowe and Griffith.
The MHS varsity girls travel to Charles City today, Thursday, May 2, for a game against the Panthers. On Tuesday, Mathews hosts West Point, with the varsity game starting at 6.
