MHS girls beat Northumberland, Lafayette

The Mathews High School varsity softball team picked up a pair of victories over Northumberland and Lafayette this past week to improve its season record to 2-1.

Last Thursday, the Lady Devils traveled to Northumberland to shut out the Indians, 12-0. Morgan Crittenden pitched a complete game, giving up only one hit and collecting six strikeouts.

Leading hitters included Avery Thomas (single, triple), Aly Jackson (two singles), Crittenden (double), Christiana Wood (triple), Addy Lowe (single, double), and Chelsea Armistead and Angel Schultz (one single apiece).

The winning streak kept going on Tuesday, as Mathews blew away the visiting Lafayette Rams, 9-3. Crittenden again was on the pitcher’s mound, going the distance while striking out seven to get the win.

Mathews players scattered 15 hits in the game. Thomas and Jackson each collected three hits to lead the squad. The Devils travel to Montross today for a 5 o’clock game against Westmoreland High School.
