MHS girls beat Lancaster, fall to Cavs

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team picked up one win and a loss in a pair of home games this past week, defeating the visiting Lancaster Red Devils, 68-54, on Dec. 8 and falling to the King William Cavaliers on Tuesday, 64-36.

In last Wednesday’s win over Lancaster, senior Joice Small was the top scorer for Mathews with 20 points, followed by junior Kayla Carr (14 points), junior Sarah Ashbaugh (12), junior Zayle Darby (seven), freshman Nia Eyrich (four) and senior Olivia Coons (two points).

Small was the leading scorer again on Tuesday, ending the King William game with 12 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Sarah Ashbaugh also ended the night in double digits, with 10 points and three rebounds. Darby had six points and two rebounds; junior Reese Brock had five points, two rebounds and three steals; sophomore Trinity Reynolds had two points, and junior Olivia Ashbaugh had one point. The varsity team now holds a record of 4-2.
