MHS girls advance to state tennis semis, fall to Raiders

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team, runners-up in last week’s Region 1A tournament, defeated the Region B champions from Buffalo Gap High School in Friday’s VHSL quarterfinals, 5-4, moving them into Tuesday’s state semifinals, where they fell to the defending state champion Rappahannock Raiders.

“The players have come to practice every day, encouraged one another and challenged each other in practice. This is their reward, they deserve it,” head coach Jon Hatch said of the girls’ upset victory over Buffalo Gap.

Players Lily Jarosz, Lyla Duff, Emersyn Duff, Liberti Carter, Ella Ward, Jayda Thomas, Addison Griffith all contributed to the winning effort as the team prepared for match.
