Mathews High School closed the books on a disappointing football season last Thursday with a 45-0 season-ending loss on the road to the Middlesex Chargers.
The loss put the Devils’ final record at 1-9, with the only win coming as a result of a forfeit by King and Queen. In last Thursday’s game, Middlesex scored most of its points in the first two quarters, taking a 42-0 lead into halftime.
In this game, Mathews was without the services of its starting quarterback and running back, due to injuries. With the two backs injured, the last healthy offensive back, sophomore Chance Spencer, stepped up to the plate. As the Devils’ quarterback, Spencer had 87 passing yards for the game, receiver Elijah Willis had 48 receiving yards, Justin Ashberry had 40, and fullback Brett Perriello had 58 rushing yards.
For the Blue Devils’ defense, cornerback Willis had five tackles, Tyrese Brooks had two, rover Justin Ashberry had two tackles and a tackle for a loss, Josh Monastyrly had two tackles, linebacker Alec Thompson had four tackles, Jake Wilson had two tackles and a tackle for a loss, and Perriello had two tackles. Defensive tackle Luke Mew had three tackles, Edward Wade had three tackles and one tackle for a loss, and Tylon Forrest had two tackles.
Last Thursday’s game marked the final appearance for seniors Brett Perriello, John Edwards, Jarius Monroe, Jake Wilson, Andie Schlosshan, Alec Thompson, Jesse Bristow and Elijah Willis.
