MHS boys go 1-1 in recent soccer action

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ soccer team went 1-1 in recent action, falling to Rappahannock on Friday, 2-0, and bouncing back on Monday to coast to a 9-3 victory over Northumberland.

Although the Devils fell to the Raiders on Friday, Mathews improved its performance compared to the first matchup between these two teams, letting only two goals slip by. The defensive part of the field had communication flowing throughout the entire match. There were multiple shots taken on goal; however, Mathews could not follow through.

It was a different story on Monday, when freshman Salvador Cardenas scored the first goal, assisted by Andrew Greve, as the MHS offense racked up six goals to only one for Northumberland in the one-sided victory.

The win gave the varsity boys a 3-7 season record. This Friday, the team will look to pick up win number four at King and Queen High School, starting at 6 p.m.
