MHS boys fall to powerful Northampton squads

It was a tough opening night for the Mathews High School boys’ basketball program, as both the varsity and JV teams fell to powerful squads from Northampton on Tuesday night in front of a home crowd.

JV Devils

The evening began with the JV Devils facing off against the visiting Yellow Jackets, with Mathews falling, 69-25. Northampton took command early on, putting up a dozen points before Mathews was able to get on the scoreboard. The Yellow Jackets continued to surge ahead with a 44-10-point lead at the half.

Varsity Devils

The varsity squad didn’t fare any better, falling by a 103-59 margin to the powerful Yellow Jackets. Northampton provided a strong press and had a productive offense in the first quarter, scoring 42 points. Mathews held them to only 19 in the second, but continued to struggle to score.

The Blue Devils were propelled by Jordyn Cosby with 18 points and Demond Darby with 11. The Blue Devils are led by coach Johnny Wilson.
