MHS boys beat Westmoreland, 8-3

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team opened the 2024 season with one win and two losses.

On Tuesday, March 12, the Blue Devils traveled to Essex to face the Trojans in the opener, falling in six innings, 12-2. Essex gained an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of three Blue Devil errors. Mathews didn’t get a chance to score until the top of the sixth inning, when Timmy Dehoux hit the ball straight past the center fielder and Justin Jones with a line drive to right-center field both with base hits, scoring both Mathews runs.

Mathews hosted Northumberland last Thursday in the Devils’ home opener, falling to the Indians, 14-2. North-umberland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on two errors and three wild pitches. The Indians kept sending the ball to the outfield and taking advantage of errors to rack up 14 runs in total. The Blue Devils scored one run in the bottom of the third.
