The Mathews High School varsity baseball team split a pair of games this week, falling 5-1 at home last Thursday to Essex, and winning a high-scoring affair at Christchurch School on Tuesday, 19-10. Essex In spite of Thomas Hubbard’s strong performance on the mound, Mathews fell to the undefeated Trojans, 5-1. Mathews only trailed 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh, when the Trojans took control of the game. Hubbard helped out his cause on offense, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Ethan Hudgins drove in the Devils’ only run. Christchurch Mathews exploded with seven runs in the top of the first inning, and 10 more in the third inning to dominate Christchurch on Tuesday. Hubbard was the winning pitcher. Aidan West went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs. Dawson Adams went 3-for-3, scoring two runs and three RBIs.
