Men’s quad golden at Head of Lafayette

The Mobjack Rowing Association junior fall racing program travelled to Lakewood Park in Norfolk Sunday to compete in the 28th annual Head of the Lafayette, a 5,000-meter head race.

Starting at the Granby Street Bridge, crews race 2,500 meters up the Lafayette River, continue racing with a sweeping U-turn to port, and complete the race by returning the last 2,500 meters to the other side of the bridge.

Twelve crew clubs made 100 entries to race in 70 different events. The Mobjack team entered the men’s junior single, double and quad and the women’s double, pulling in a good day of results.

Racing in the men’s junior single, Alex Meier won a bronze behind Princess Anne and Great Bridge and ahead of teammate Zach Hudson with Gloucester, and Jordan Lake finishing out the field. Next up were Sam Tomcany and Will Lang in the double. The duo placed fourth of 11 entries behind Williamsburg Boat Club A and B and Gloucester and ahead of Granby, Great Bridge, Jordan Lake A and B and Great Bridge. Milly Johnson and Sydney Kollar raced next in their double turning in a gold medal performance, eighteen seconds ahead of WBC and five other entries.

Topping off MRA’s competition, Tomcany, Lang, Meier and Hudson launched for the men’s quad event. Although they had to push hard to arrive at the start on time, the foursome raced well, winning Gold ahead of the WBC A, B, and C, Gloucester, Great Bridge and WBC D entries.

Coach Tim Ulsaker was pleased with the team’s performance, saying “the team has put in a lot of effort in improving their skills since last spring. Everyone is going home with medals, which always gives the coach and athletes a sense of accomplishment.”
