Mathews runners dominate at districts

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams both took first place at the Tidewater District Cross Country Meet held at Newport News Park last Wednesday, Oct. 25. Runners Seth James and Lauren Johnson both broke course records for MHS.

James finished third overall with a finishing time of 16:52, followed by Gavin Dustin with a time of 16:53 and Andrew Greve at 17:03.

Blake Hunley finished next for Mathews with a time of 17:05, followed by Chance Higginbotham (17:22), Adam Dustin (17:35), Carlos Clayborn (18:26) and Zachary Salvadori (19:00). The boys completed the race with a team score of 27.Johnson placed first overall with a time of 20:18, followed by Adelle Hudgins who crossed the finish line third with a time of 21:03.

Next for Mathews was Lorena Carballo with a time of 22:29, followed by Zoe Camp (22:49), Morgan Stearns (24:19), Lyla Duff (24:39), Baylee Bell (27:11) and Jordan Sadeg (27:20). The girls finished the race with a team score of 33.
