Mathews man dies after falling in water

The Mathews Sheriff’s Office, along with members of the county’s fire department and rescue squad, responded to a man overboard in the 200 block of Marina Road in North shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday.

The victim, James Watts III, 78, of North, was recovered from Greenmansion Cove and pronounced deceased by Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, according to Major J.T. Williams of the sheriff’s office.

Richmond residents who were boating in an 8’ inflatable water craft in the vicinity of Mobjack Marina reported seeing the victim on his dock and waving to him as they went by, said Williams. They then saw him fall into the water and were able to get to him and drag him to shore, where they performed CPR but were unable to revive him.

Williams said the cause of death could have been an underlying medical condition. The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk by Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home to determine cause of death. ...
