The Mathews High School golf team picked up its first win in competition this past week.
The boys competed in two matches recently. The first match, which was scheduled to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 15, was rescheduled to Wednesday, Aug. 16 due to inclement weather.
The nine-hole match was held at Piankatank River Golf Course and the Blue Devils faced Group 2A school King William. Mathews was led by Zach Dehoux who shot a 42, which tied his career best. He was followed by Cole Huff and Matt Jenkins who each shot 53 and Chase Lewis who finished with a 59.
Taylor Hubbard of King William was the low scorer, with a 35. The final team scores were 207-206, King William winning by just one stroke. Although the team lost, coach James Hutcheson was pleased by their competitive play, as the Blue Devils improved by 10 strokes from their first match of the season.
The team’s next match was held the following day against Middlesex High School at their shared home course, the Piankatank River Golf Course. The Blue Devils were led once again by Dehoux, who shot a 48. He was followed by Huff who shot a 49, Jenkins who shot a 50, and Lewis who rounded out the team score with a 51.
Although Middlesex was led by Avary Payne, who had the low score of the match with a 47, Mathews was able to get the win with a final team score of 198-212.
“I’m thrilled that we got the win today, the kids have been working very hard, and this is their first win as varsity golfers. It was also a great milestone to see them shoot under 200 for the first time since I became coach,” coach Hutcheson said.
The team’s next match will be on Tuesday at the Piankatank River Golf Course against the Middlesex Chargers.
