The Mathews High School track teams were extremely successful at the regional championship last Thursday, with the girls winning the Region A title and the boys finishing third.

For the boys, C.J. Kelly won the discus with a throw of 164’1", tying a school record set by Charles Minters in 1969. Coach Tony Forrest is confident that Kelly can break it at the state championship meet.

Christine Robbins was a standout for the girls. She was awarded status as the Most Outstanding Player within the region. She placed eighth in the long jump (15’0.5") and sixth in the triple jump (30’0.5"). Robbins then won both the 100-meter hurdles (16.75) and the 300-meter hurdles (51.12).

As for other individuals on the girls’ side, Katelyn Dehnert won the shot put with a throw of 32’11", resetting the school record she broke at the district meet. Kaylyn Kelly finished second in the discus with a throw of 98’10.5". Jessica Nelson won the ...
