Mathews girls start hoop season strong

Starting the season strong, the Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team holds a record of 3-1.

On Dec. 1, the girls traveled to Essex County and took the win, 60-24. Carrying the team, junior Reese Brock had a total of 26 points and six steals. Senior Joice Small earned 22 points and 18 rebounds, and junior Sarah Ashbaugh scored two points and 11 rebounds.

Additionally, junior Kayla Carr contributed five points, freshman Nia Eyrich and sophomore Trinity Reynolds two points, and junior Zayle Darby one point.

On Dec. 3, the Lady Blue Devils played home against West Point. Unfortunately, the varsity squad lost to the Pointers, 46-31. Despite the loss, Small led the team with a total of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Ashbaugh had four points and eight steals, Reynolds with four points, Brock with two points, and Darby and junior Emmillie Smith both with one point apiece.

The Lady Devils played the Rappahannock Raiders on Monday night and despite struggling, Mathews prevailed, 45-37. Leading the team again, Small scored a total of 17 points and had 14 rebounds, eight blocks, and four steals. Ashbaugh contributed 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal. Darby had a total of eight points, Carr and Reynolds each scored four points, and Eyrich scored two.

JV Devils

So far in the season, the JV girls have a record of 1-2. The girls traveled to Essex County as well, but unfortunately fell to the Trojans, 17-9. Avery Thomas led the team scoring three points, Emily Coons and Lyla Duff scored two, and Alivia Garrett and Lindsey Coons each scored one. On Dec. 3, the JV team won against the Pointers with a final score of 17-6.

aura Rowe led the team with four points, Lyla Duff with three, and Emily Coons, Lannah Callis, Alivia Garrett, Lindsey Coons, and Avery Thomas all with two each. The girls traveled to Rappahannock Monday night but unfortunately lost the game 25-10. Lindsey Coons contributed four points, and Thomas, Garrett, and Callis all with two apiece.
