Unique Design Florist recently moved from one Mathews location to another.
Owner Deborah Smith of Moon, said she wanted more visibility for her shop and saw an opportunity when a store beside the Best Value supermarket became available. She moved from Church Street and opened at the new location on Oct. 1.
The new location has 1,000 square feet, roughly the same size as her previous store, but it has brought in a new customer base. She said many customers say they never realized Smith’s shop had been in business for 3½ years in the Mathews village.
Smith specializes in fresh and silk flowers, and like the business name states, she tries to offer unique floral displays. Also, she sells individual flowers if that is what a customer wants.
Although she has an affinity for roses, Smith mixes an assortment of flowers into her displays. She handles both large and small flower arrangements, including those for funerals, weddings, and businesses.
In addition, the shop is filled with gifts. Nautical items sell very well, Smith said. Also offered are a selection of pottery, glassware, ceramics, antique mirrors and lamps and more.
Smith said she has more than 30 years’ floral design experience, having previously worked for several florists in the Richmond area. She is originally from New Kent County.
Her husband, Ronald, is a mechanic for CSX railroad. Her son, Duff Hisey, a junior at Mathews High School, works part-time at her shop and handles some of the deliveries.
Vickie Farmer, also of Moon, works part-time at Unique Design Florist. Farmer also works as a special education bus aide for Mathews Public Schools.
Smith offered a special thanks to her family and to Farmer for their support, along with that of her many loyal customers.
