Mathews churches come together to prepare youth for school year

Ten churches within the Mathews community joined forces on Saturday afternoon in an event to prepare youngsters for the coming school year, as well as have some summer fun.

The highlight of the No Walls Community Day—which was held at Port Fun near Mathews High School—was the giving away of more than 300 book bags filled with school supplies, which had been donated by community members and businesses. The party was open to everyone.

Along with free book bags, there were areas for every age group that included face-painting by many volunteers led by professional face-painter Sarah Zang of Gloucester. Children were given a chance to explore a fire truck while families could purchase affordable meals from a local food truck, ReRe’s Home Cooking of Saluda. The Chick-fil-A cow came from Gloucester and joined in the fun, playing basketball, tag and other games with the children.
