Mathews BOS scheduled to adopt budget tonight

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on the proposed FY2026 tax rates at 6 o’clock tonight, Thursday, May 1, in the historic courthouse on Court Street. The board is also scheduled to adopt its proposed $36.35 million budget, $26.2 million of which will come from local funding and $10.15 million from state and federal funds.
This will be the second public hearing on the proposed real estate tax rate of 66 cents per $100 of assessed value, which would be a 10-cent increase over the current rate of 56 cents per $100 of assessed value if enacted. However, the board is expected to set a tax rate well below the 10 cents advertised, instead looking at a rate of around 4 cents per $100 of assessed value. The second public hearing is necessary because the board did not set the tax rate during the first public hearing on April 17, said county administrator Ramona Wilson.
