Mathews board considers size of its pay raise

The Mathews County School Board is expected to vote Tuesday night to adopt one of two proposed 2015-2016 budgets, with the only difference being how much of a raise it would be able to give to teachers and other employees.

At issue is whether to give a raise of roughly 1.5 percent (which would incorporate a step on the salary scale) or give everyone 1.5 percent plus a step, which would cost roughly $50,000 to $60,000 more, according to schools superintendent Dr. David J. Holleran.

Board members met Tuesday night in the Mathews High School media center to hold a public hearing on the proposed budget, as well as hold a work session.

As proposed by Holleran, the $13.45 million budget includes a county contribution of $7.44 million, a decrease of $96,335 from the current allocation.
