Lucy Grey Rash Soles of Gloucester, was born on August 20, 1932 to Rufus and Mary Keasler Rash in Crewe, Va. She died on June 1, 2026. As the youngest of five siblings growing up during the Great Depression, she learned early in life the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the significance of a relationship with Jesus Christ.
After graduating from high school in 1949, Lucy entered Johnston-Willis Hospital’s nursing program, earning an RN degree in 1952. She moved to Gloucester soon afterward, where she worked for several local doctors, including brothers, Dr. Raymond and Dr. William Brown, on Main Street. In 1966, she began her career as a public health nurse with the Gloucester County Health Department, from which she retired in 1991. Nursing was her passion, and she never tired of running into former patients, especially when they called her ‘Miss Rash.’
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, her four siblings and their spouses, and her husband of nearly 60 years, George Blanton Soles. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Blanton Soles of Lynchburg, Va.; two granddaughters, Ashley Stokes of Lynchburg, and Laura Caruso (Dylan) of Appomattox, Va. Great-grandchildren, Emory Blanton Caruso and Emmett Joseph Caruso also survive her, as well as numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family received friends on Friday, June 5, at Andrews Funeral Home from 6:30-8 p.m. The funeral service was scheduled for Saturday, June 6, at 11 o’clock at Petsworth Baptist Church, 2471 Hickory Fork Road, Gloucester, Va. The Rev. John Pouchot, the Rev. Dennis Hollandsworth, and the Rev. Vincent Pryor presided.
