Local representatives in Virginia Senate to step down

The two legislators representing Gloucester and Mathews in the Senate of Virginia—Sens. Thomas K. Norment Jr. (R-James City) and Lynwood W. Lewis Jr. (D-Accomack)—have recently announced their intention not to seek another term this November. Sen. Norment, who has served in the General Assembly since 1992, made his announcement in the Feb. 26 Richmond Times-Dispatch that he will step down from his seat at the end of his term. Norment represents Virginia’s 3rd Senate District, which includes Gloucester County. Sen. Lewis, who assumed office in January 2014 filling the seat left vacant by former Gov. Ralph Northam, represents the 6th Senate District, which includes Mathews County, released his statement Tuesday (see related letter). Norment, who has served as Senate minority leader since 2020, sits on four Senate committees: Rules, Judiciary, Commerce and Labor, and Finance and Appropriations.
