Lifelong waterman honored as Guinea Jubilee grand marshal

Robert Lee Greene of Jenkins Neck, who started working on the water at the age of eight, will be honored as grand marshal of the 2012 Guinea Jubilee.

The jubilee will be held Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29 on the grounds of the Abingdon Ruritan Centre, Bena. Greene will lead the annual parade which passes through Bena.

Jubilee chair Tara Thomas announced his selection at the annual Guinea Jubilee unveiling, held Sunday at the Abingdon Ruritan Club building.

She said Greene, who was born in 1940, has worked on the water for 64 years. He started out as a boy crabbing with his father, for many years aboard the workboat Pearl G., and went full time at the age of 14.

Today, he helps his sons in their fishing and crabbing business. One of the greatest helps, Thomas said, takes place before he goes to work.

She said Greene gets up at 12:30 a.m. and makes 16 sandwiches to be sure the working watermen have enough food to get through the day. "And his wife says he is the bes...
