Letter: We need to take care of what we have first

I retired and moved to Mathews County four and a half years ago to live in paradise on Davis Creek—"Low Country" as they call it in South Carolina. Just before moving here from Richmond, a friend and I bought a small marina on Davis Creek, primarily to clean up a much-neglected waterfront and as a land investment.

Fast forward to today. I find myself running a nice little marina. It truly has been a wonderful experience and a big eye-opener when it comes to dealing with Corps of Engineers and state and local politicians with regard to getting the Davis Creek channel maintenance dredged. The last time it was done was in 1972.

They say funds are not available and there is not enough commercial use to warrant maintaining of the channel. That is in part because the deep-draft boats can no longer get in and out of the channel.
